Bruins and the Draft

The Bruins have done a good job in recent years in making the best of their draft picks. Many recently drafted players are still in juniors or developing in Providence, but a few current players have been bred and raised as purebred Bruins.

Of the 22 active players on the Bruins current roster, 21 have been drafted and 1 (Rich Peverley) is undrafted. Of the 21 drafted players on the roster, 6 have been drafted by the Bruins (Lucic, Krejci, Bergeron, Caron, Marchand, Seguin), 2 by Toronto (Thornton, Rask), 2 more by Florida (Campbell, Horton), and a combination of another 11 teams (1 of which nolonger exists – the Quebec Nordiques, who drafted Tim Thomas 217th overall in 1994).

6 current Bruins are first round draftees, 5 went in the second round, and 4 in the third round. In terms of draft pick number not related to round, the Bruins break down as follows:

  • 2 – Tyler Seguin (2010)
  • 3 – Nathan Horton (2003)
  • 4 – Benoit Pouliot (2005)
  • 20 – Daniel Paille (2002)
  • 21 – Tuukka Rask (2005)
  • 25 – Jordan Caron (2009)
  • 45 – Patrice Bergeron (2003)
  • 50 – Milan Lucic (2006)
  • 55 – Adam McQuaid (2005)
  • 56 – Zdeno Chara (1996)
  • 67 – Gregory Campbell (2002)
  • 71 – Brad Marchand (2006)
  • 83 – Joe Corvo (1997)
  • 93 – Steven Kampfer (2007)
  • 94 – Chris Kelly (1999)
  • 172 – Dennis Seidenberg (2001)
  • 208 – Andrew Ference (1997)
  • 217 – Tim Thomas (1994)
In conclusion, about 28% of the Bruins roster were drafted by the Bruins, while Toronto and Florida each account for 9%, a combination of the Senators, Sabres, Wild, Avalanche, Islanders, Kings, Penguins, Ducks, Nordiques, Blue Jackets, and Flyers account for 4% each, and going undrafted accounts for 4%, aka 1 member of the roster. 28% of the roster was drafted in the 1st round, 23% in the 2nd round, and 18% in the 3rd round.

In the end, the draft is unpredictable and even the best scouts in the world can’t foresee what the best talent that they witnessed in juniors or elsewhere will evolve into anything professionally. That part is left up to the player and the Bruins organization all the way down the farm system. Only time will tell if recently signed 2011 1st round/9th overall draft pick Dougie Hamilton will make the Bruins roster full-time in the future, along with other promising draft picks Alexander Khohklachev (2011, 2nd/40th), Jared Knight (2010, 2nd/32th), or Ryan Spooner (2010, 2nd/35th), for example.
